Bodhisattva Universal Worthy, also known as Samantabhadra in Sanskrit or Fugen in Japanese, is a significant figure in Mahayana Buddhism and particularly the Lotus Sutra. He represents the practice and meditation of the Bodhisattva path, and is often associated with making great vows and performing virtuous actions.

Here is a retelling of the story of Bodhisattva Universal Worthy:

Once, in the land of the Buddha named King of Precious Dignity and Superior Virtue, a Bodhisattva named Universal Worthy was moved by the profound teachings of the Lotus Sutra. Recognizing its transformative power, he embarked on a journey to the Saha world to listen to the teachings once more.

Upon his arrival, Bodhisattva Universal Worthy approached the Buddha Shakyamuni with reverence and humility. He sought the Buddha’s wisdom and asked about the power of the Lotus Sutra. The Buddha bestowed the dharani upon him, a mystical formula for the protection of the sutra’s practitioners.

Inspired, Universal Worthy made a solemn vow to the Buddha. He pledged that he would use his divine powers to guard and protect the Lotus Sutra and ensure its teachings would be spread throughout the world. He also committed to safeguarding its practitioners, ensuring they could study and practice without hindrance.

After hearing Bodhisattva Universal Worthy’s pledge, the Buddha laid out the four conditions necessary for men and women to acquire the Lotus Sutra after his final nirvana. These conditions were: being protected by the Buddhas, having cultivated numerous virtuous roots, having entered the clusters of right concentration, and having awakened the aspiration to save all living beings.

Over time, Bodhisattva Universal Worthy became a symbol of excellent vows, actions, and meditation. He represented the commitment and dedication required to propagate the Lotus Sutra’s teachings. His vow of protection extended to all practitioners of the sutra, and his actions served as a shining example of how one’s devotion to Buddhist principles can make a significant impact on the world.

Through this journey, Bodhisattva Universal Worthy embodied the principles of selflessness, compassion, and the pursuit of wisdom. His story continues to inspire those who seek to follow the Bodhisattva path, encouraging them to make their own vows, perform virtuous deeds, and strive towards enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Let’s continue spreading the Lotus Sutra’s teachings for the benefit of all beings. 🌍🌺📜🔄🤲🌈💖
