Chapter 13–Gautamī’s Query About Her Enlightenment

Then Gautamī, the noble matron and sister of the Buddha’s mother, stood with six hundred nuns, some seasoned and some in training. She raised her hands towards the Buddha and looked up, her face filled with concern.

The Lord asked, “Why do you look so troubled, Gautamī? Why do you gaze at me so intently?”

She replied, “Lord, you have not spoken of me nor revealed my destiny to enlightenment.”

He assured her, “But Gautamī, you were included in my prediction for all here. You will be a Bodhisattva and a teacher of the spiritual law, guiding thirty-eight hundred thousand myriads of others towards enlightenment. These six thousand nuns with you, some already wise and others still learning, will also become Bodhisattvas, guiding others to the truth. Eventually, you will be a Buddha known as Lovely to See for All Beings, a wise and compassionate guide. And you will guide those six thousand Bodhisattvas about their paths to enlightenment.”
