Mr. Altig’s Overview of the Wonderful Dharma of the Lotus Sutra

The Lotus Sutra, a sacred text of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, is a beacon of light that illuminates the path to enlightenment for all people. This sutra, which was spoken by the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, expounds upon the ultimate truth of the one vehicle that leads to the attainment of Buddhahood.

As a practitioner of the teachings of Nichiren, I have found great inspiration and guidance in the Lotus Sutra. However, in order to fully understand and appreciate the significance of this sutra, it is necessary to delve deeper into the characters that appear within its pages.

This book is intended to serve as an exploration of the characters encountered in the Lotus Sutra, including Shakyamuni Buddha, Bodhisattvas Maitreya and Manjushri, Shariputra and other arhats, the Treasure Tower Buddha, remembered Buddhas from the past, Endless Intent Bodhisattva, and the Daughter of the Dragon King Sagara. Through an examination of their roles and teachings in the sutra, we will gain a deeper understanding of the significance of the Lotus Sutra in the Mahayana Buddhist tradition and our own journey towards enlightenment.
