In the Lotus Sutra’s eighteenth chapter,
The Buddha imparts a valuable capture,
Of the merits of spontaneous joy,
That when embraced, one’s blessings multiply.
Bodhisattva Maitreya asks the Buddha,
What benefits come from joy that’s true?
The Buddha responds with wisdom bright,
Joy brings the Law’s message to light.
The ones who hear and with joy respond,
Will share the Law with family and beyond,
The ripple effect of happiness,
Helps spread the Law with great finesse.
The blessings of the fiftieth person,
Who hears the Law and responds with passion,
Far exceed those of generous giving,
To living beings in their daily living.
Encouraging others to listen and learn,
Will bring blessings that one can discern,
Heavenly rebirth and wealth untold,
And features that are precious gold.
The power of joy is key,
In successful propagation, it’s plain to see,
The ripple effect it brings about,
Can help many people without a doubt.
The message is relevant today,
In how we interact, live, and play,
Positivity and joy that we share,
Can positively impact those in our care.
In conclusion, this chapter of the Lotus Sutra,
Teaches us the value of joy and its sutra,
Encouraging us to share, spread, and learn,
In doing so, our blessings will take a great turn.
