Mr. Altig’s Overview of the Wonderful Dharma of the Lotus Sutra

Once upon a time, in a land filled with vast and treacherous wilderness, a diverse group of travelers gathered, each with their unique backgrounds and aspirations. They sought to embark on a journey to find a legendary land filled with resplendent jewels, symbolizing the ultimate reward, a life of ease, comfort, and spiritual fulfillment. To guide them on this arduous quest, they relied on a wise and compassionate leader, who had traversed this path many times before and had successfully guided countless others to their goals.

As the journey progressed, the travelers faced numerous challenges, including harsh weather conditions, treacherous terrain, and encounters with wild animals. Each traveler faced their own unique struggles, battling internal fears, doubts, and attachments. Despite the guide’s unwavering support, their energy and faith began to wane. Many travelers considered abandoning the journey, returning to the comforts of their old lives.

Witnessing their exhaustion and wavering determination, the guide decided to employ an expedient means to inspire them to continue their journey. Using his deep wisdom and magical powers, he created an enchanting imaginary city on the horizon. The city was resplendent with beautiful architecture, serene parks, and lively marketplaces. The air was filled with the fragrant scent of flowers and the harmonious melodies of songbirds.

As the travelers approached the city, they were greeted by its enlightened citizens, who welcomed them with open arms and warm smiles. Among these citizens were śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and bodhisattvas, each representing different stages of spiritual development and accomplishment.

The weary travelers were invited to stay and learn from the citizens, who shared their stories of spiritual growth, their insights into the nature of existence, and their experiences of compassion, wisdom, and inner peace. Inspired by these encounters, the travelers began to develop a deeper understanding of their own spiritual capacities and the importance of perseverance in the pursuit of the treasure they sought.

While the travelers rested in the city, the guide took the opportunity to observe their progress, offering personalized guidance and encouragement to each individual. He compassionately addressed their doubts and fears, providing tailored teachings to help them overcome their inner struggles.

Once the travelers were fully rested and reinvigorated, the guide gathered them together and revealed the truth: the city was an illusion, created solely to provide them with the encouragement, rest, and wisdom they needed to continue their journey. The real treasure—the legendary land filled with resplendent jewels—still lay ahead, waiting to be discovered.

With newfound energy, determination, and deeper bonds with one another, the travelers resumed their journey, inspired by the lessons they had learned from the imaginary city and its enlightened citizens. They now understood that the path to the treasure was not a linear one, but rather a journey filled with various stages, lessons, and personal growth.
