Chapter 7–The Cosmic Quake and Luminosity: Revelation of the Buddha’s Enlightenment

Monks, as the Lord Mahabhignagnanabhibhu, the Tathagata, reached the pinnacle of supreme, perfect enlightenment, something extraordinary occurred. Fifty hundred thousand myriads of spheres in each of the ten directions of space trembled in six different ways, illuminating with an intense, great brilliance.

Even in the darkest, most desolate corners of the universe, where the sun and moon’s mighty light never reaches, a sudden brilliance appeared. Beings dwelling in these hidden realms saw each other for the first time, exclaiming in wonder, “Look, there are other beings here!”

The palaces and celestial vehicles of the gods, extending all the way to the Brahma-world, quivered and glowed with a luminosity surpassing even the divine splendor of the gods. A great earthquake and a sublime radiance emerged simultaneously.

To the east, the aerial vehicles of the Brahma angels in these vast realms sparkled, glittered, and glowed with unprecedented splendor and glory. The Brahma angels pondered the meaning of this phenomenon: “What could be foretold by this incredible display of light and brilliance?”

The great Brahma-angel named Sarvasattvatrātri, the “Saviour of All Beings,” gathered the numerous Brahma angels. They visited each other’s abodes, sharing the wondrous event, and Sarvasattvatrātri addressed them with verses that would reveal the significance of what had transpired.

Our aerial cars this day, they shine,
With rays extraordinary, a brilliant sign,
Ablaze with splendor, beauty, and light,
What may be the cause of this wondrous sight?

Come, let us seek and explore the cause,
What divine being with never-seen power draws,
A spectacle so grand, so bold and rare,
Whose might and magic fills the air?

Or could it be the Buddha, king of kings,
Born somewhere in the world, his birth it brings,
A token so divine, a splendor so bright,
That all horizons blaze with radiant light?
