In the gathering were eight thousand Bodhisattvas, new to the path, and a thought arose within them: “We’ve never before witnessed such an extraordinary prophecy for Bodhisattvas, let alone disciples. What could be the reason? What drives this moment?” Sensing their thoughts, the Lord addressed them: “Young seekers of truth, both Ānanda and I conceived the idea of supreme enlightenment at the same moment, in the presence of the Tathagata known as ‘The One Who Has Risen with a Profound Passion for the Dharma,’ the enlightened one. During that time, Ānanda was devoted to great learning, while I pursued relentless effort. Thus, I reached supreme enlightenment more quickly, while Ānanda, known as the Keeper of the Buddhas’ Sacred Teachings, took a vow to guide Bodhisattvas to full realization.”

Upon hearing the Lord’s prophecy of his destiny and learning of the virtues of his future realm, as well as his past vow, the venerable Ānanda was filled with joy, excitement, and profound delight. At that moment, he recalled the true teachings of countless Buddhas and the vow he had made long ago.

With a heart brimming with gratitude and inspiration, the venerable Ānanda then expressed his feelings in verse:
Boundless and wondrous, the Jinas appear,
Echoing truths from saints no longer here,
Now I recall, as if time slipped away,
Wisdom revived from a distant yesterday.
Doubts have dissolved, enlightenment is near,
Skilled and prepared, my path becomes clear,
Servant and keeper of truth’s sacred light,
Guiding my soul to the ultimate height.
