Chapter 14–The Graceful Proclamation of Wisdom

At that moment, the Lord recited the following verses:

The wise man, always at ease,
Preaches the law with graceful peace,
Seated high on a pulpit prepared,
On a spot clean, pretty, and declared.

Adorned in a robe of red, so fine,
Dyed with colors, a black woolen line,
A long undergarment, a dress so neat,
His appearance is humble, yet complete.

Feet washed, head and face anointed smooth,
He ascends the pulpit, in a mindful groove,
With footbank provided, cloths finely laid,
He sits, and his wisdom is calmly displayed.

Seated thus, with an attentive crowd,
Monks, nuns, and lay devotees avowed,
He shares discourses, varied and sweet,
Pleasing to all who sit at his feet.

Kings and princes, men and women too,
Hear his sermon, diverse and true,
Free from bias, rich and profound,
The wise man’s words resound.

If a question arises, even then,
He’ll explain anew to women and men,
In order, clear, so all comprehend,
Gaining enlightenment, a spiritual blend.

Tireless, the wise man shares his art,
No fatigue or listlessness in his heart,
Displaying charity’s strength, a vibrant force,
Guiding all on the spiritual course.

Day and night, with wisdom bright,
The wise man preaches law’s pure light,
Myriads of lessons, profound and true,
Satisfies all, requires nothing in lieu.

Food and drink, cloth, couch, or care,
Robes or medicine, thoughts not there,
From the congregation, he wants not a thing,
His mind’s on higher truths to bring.

Always thinking, with compassionate gaze,
“How can we reach Buddha’s ways?
I’ll share this law, happiness to unfold,
For the world’s benefit, a love untold.”

After my passing, the monk who’ll share,
Without envy, with love and care,
Shall face no trouble, grief, or dismay,
Firm in forbearance, he’ll find his way.

No one shall frighten, beat, or blame,
Drive him away or taint his name,
For he’s firm in strength, patient and wise,
His path’s unswayed by worldly ties.

Peaceful, wise, as described before,
Hundreds of advantages, so much more,
Kotis abundant, beyond mere count,
Eons wouldn’t suffice to the full amount.
