Vintage armchair surrounded by lotus flowers and houseplants in a sunlit room

DAY 18: Eshō Funi

THESIS: We divide the work: first fix ourselves, then fix our surroundings. Or first fix the surroundings, and hope the self follows.

LOTUS LOGIC: Later Tiantai and Nichiren thought refuses the division. Eshō funi — “two but not two” — holds that the self (shō) and its environment (e) are non-dual: two poles of one reality. You cannot polish one mirror without polishing the other. This is why the tradition says that changing your own life-state changes your surroundings — and why caring for your surroundings is a spiritual practice, not a distraction from one.

🌷 You and your room are one argument. Change the premise, and both rewrite.
🌷 The state of your desk is the state of your mind, still negotiating.

ACTION: Do not try to change yourself today. Change one thing in your immediate environment — clear the desk, open the window, water the plant — and observe what shifts inside.
